Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders: Challenges for Primary Care

About the webinar: During the webinar, the presenter will list the diagnostic criteria for a substance use disorder; describe the common brain effects of various euphoria producing drugs; compare and contrast prescribing controlled drugs to patients with substance abuse prone brains versus prescribing to those without substance abuse prone brains; and outline the implications of substance use disorder moderate and severe for primary care and behavioral health practitioners.
About the presenter: Dr. Ted Parran is a 1978 graduate with honors in history from Kenyon College and a 1982 graduate from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Baltimore City Hospital of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Following his residency, Dr. Parran was selected to be the medical chief resident. In 1987, he received the Outstanding Faculty Teacher Award from the Department of Medicine. In 1988, he returned to Cleveland and CWRU School of Medicine. Dr. Parran is the co-director of the Foundations of Clinical Medicine Course, a course with topics which touch on the doctor patient relationship, health disparities, professionalism, cultural competence and health policy. He is the medical director of the Program in Continuing Medical Education, and in 2007 was named as the Isabel and Carter Wang Professor and Chair in Medical Education, all at CWRU School of Medicine.

Integrating SBIRT into Primary Care

About the webinar: Screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is a preventative process aimed at reducing risks related to alcohol and substance use. Primary care organizations are considering SBIRT as part of a transition to integrated care approach with patients. This webinar will lay out a guide for initiating the process of implementing SBIRT. Lessons learned from SBIRT integration across rural health, community health and federally qualified healthcare centers will be discussed.
About the presenter: Mallori DeSalle is a licensed mental health counselor, nationally certified counselor and an internationally certified prevention specialist. For more than 15 years Ms. DeSalle has contributed to the mental health, substance abuse and public health/prevention fields. Since 2008, Mallori has been an adjunct faculty member and research associate at Indiana University-Bloomington’s School of Public Health. Within the university, Ms. DeSalle serves the Indiana Prevention Resource Center as the Outreach Coordinator and Lead Motivational Interviewing (MI) Trainer for the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) program. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and listed on the National ATTC SBIRT Trainers’ Registry. Mallori has provided training and technical support throughout SBIRT integration processes to over 20 healthcare and mental health organizations in the Midwest.

About the webinar: The webinar will present a brief over view of Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing is a counseling style that elicits behavior change by helping clients resolve their ambivalence. It is commonly used with people who have Substance Use Disorders. The skills are transferable, however, to other situations when a person is ambivalent to change. This webinar will provide an overview of Motivational Interviewing and basic techniques.
About the presenter: Professor Ellis became a full-time member of School of Social Work beginning Fall of 2015. Prior University experience had been as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Social Work at Cleveland State University since 2007. Overall, he has almost 30 years experience in the field of addictions and mental health.
Professor Ellis remains a consultant with the Great Lakes Addiction Technology Transfer Center in Chicago Illinois, and is on the ATTC National Faculty of Trainers for Contingency Management, Clinical Supervision, Technology Enhanced Clinical Supervision, Trauma Informed Care, and Recovery Oriented Systems of Care.

Recipe Book for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Integration

About the webinar: This webinar will focus on the key ingredients, necessary skills/preparation, and additional resources that community clinics will need in order to implement and integrate MAT services within their clinical settings. From available trainings to suggested space/ workflow to recommended staffing models, we will discuss some of the challenges that others have encountered in initiating MAT and ways to successfully overcome those challenges. We will also discuss patient care management including scheduling, diversion concerns, urine drug testing, and managing co-morbidities (other SUDs and/or mental illness).
About the presenter: Dr. Jeff Watts is a psychiatrist and addiction medicine physician with the Cook County Health and Hospitals System. He has been working in the field of addiction since 2002, and has been implementing MAT services since 2005. He has served as project director, site investigator, or co-investigator for substance abuse grants funded by HRSA, SAMHSA, NIDA CTN, and DOJ. Dr. Watts often speaks on topics such as HIV psychiatry, dual diagnosis, healthcare integration, care coordination and MAT implementation. Most recently, he has been involved with the CCHHS' initiatives on naloxone distribution, safe opioid prescribing, and MAT implementation within our ambulatory clinics, partnering FQHCs, and Stroger Hospital. He has also been working with the City of Chicago in training medical providers to prescribe MAT
