Description

The opioid epidemic is one of the fastest growing and most complex public health concerns confronting communities across the United States. Although California’s 2016 opioid-related overdose death rate was 4.9 deaths per 100,000 persons, compared to the national rate of 13.3 deaths per 100,000 persons, there have still been alarming increases in various opioid-related metrics across the State. Locally, Los Angeles County (LAC) has experienced concerning increases in opioid-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits from 2008 – 2014, along with recent increases in fentanyl-related overdoses.

This Lecture Series presentation will focus on understanding the epidemiology of the opioid crisis, as well as the State and local efforts to combat the opioid crisis. Representatives from both the California Department of Public Health and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health will discuss efforts occurring across the State and County, respectively, to address the emergence of the opioid epidemic. Efforts include establishing a statewide network of community coalitions to comprehensively address the opioid crisis, along with targeted efforts to expand the adoption of safe opioid prescribing, and access to Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) and the opioid overdose prevention medication, naloxone.

A panel discussion will follow these presentations, featuring representatives from SAPC’s specialty substance use disorder (SUD) treatment provider network. These providers will discuss their perspective on the opioid crisis, as well as their efforts to implement MAT programs to help address the epidemic.

Objectives

By the conclusion of the presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Discuss the prevalence and examine trends of the opioid epidemic in California generally and Los Angeles in particular.

  2. Identify and specify at least 3 strategies occurring across the State and locally to address the opioid crisis.

  3. Describe and summarize at least 2 considerations required in implementing MAT programs.
